SLaM Recovery College Wellbeing Webinars for All 14th-18th September

13/9/2020

 Hello Students, Colleagues and Friends,

We understand how difficult a time this is for everybody, and particularly for people who experience long term health conditions.

As SLaM Recovery College is unable to offer any classroom-based workshops now, our team has been working behind the scenes to develop online content, including vlogs, webinars and e-learning.

These sessions are available to everyone, free of charge. You don’t need to be a SLaM Recovery College student or have any connection at all to South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. We just ask that you answer a few questions and let us know which sessions you’d like to be a part of, using one of the registration form links below, and we’ll then send you links to the webinars you’ve chosen.

Every Friday we will email you the details of the online learning we are offering in the following week.

N.B. If you can't make a particular live event you can still enrol and use the link we'll send you to watch a recording later on.

Here are this week’s webinars (14th-18th September):

An Introduction to Mental Health First Aid, Part 2 | 2:30pm-3:30pm | Monday 14th September
In this short webinar, our peer trainer Kathryn (who is also an accredited instructor for MHFA England) introduces students to the MHFA approach, and what they might expect from a full MHFA course.  In Part 1 we focused on mental health awareness and depression. For this second part we will look at stress, anxiety and where and how to seek help (or signpost someone to appropriate help).  Please come armed with your questions and any concerns you have around MHFA, as Kathryn will be keen to discuss these.

The Everyday Way to Wellbeing
A new series of short webinars, which will look at some common daily challenges for people recovering from mental health problems. We want the course to be responsive to the particular needs and concerns of our students, so course topics will be partly determined by participants.
Part 3: life admin| 2:30pm-3: 30pm | Tuesday 15th September
Part 4: family life| 2:30pm-3: 30pm | Thursday 17th September

The Ayurveda Way to Wellbeing: self-massage for our hands| 2:30pm-3: 30pm | Wednesday 16th September
Ayurveda, the “wisdom of life”, is a traditional system of healing from South Asia. In this session you will learn about the benefits of self-massage for your hands, and you will learn how to do this using oil. N.B. You will need a towel and warm sesame oil or sunflower oil for this session)

Introduction to Self-Compassion | 2:30pm-3: 30pm | Friday 18th September
This stand-alone course is designed as a taster and preparation for our eight-week Moving Towards Self-Compassion course. You will be introduced to some key ideas about self-compassion and why we might need to be more compassionate towards ourselves - especially in these challenging times. We will explore our human experience of having a 'self', the nature of compassion, how to practise self-compassion and the positive impact it can have on our mental health. The session will involve a discussion of key ideas, followed by an experiential practice of self-compassion. It will conclude with a reflection and an open Q&A. You will also be able to ask questions throughout the webinar, so please feel free to express your curiosity - it is very welcome!

We warmly invite former students of Moving Towards Self-Compassion to return and share their experiences of the course with new students. We will also be discussing our new weekly Self-Compassion Practice group which we will be starting soon - so watch this space
